Adult boxers typically weigh between 55 and 70 pounds, with the males topping the size range and generally larger boned than their female counterparts.

Boxer coats are either all white, checked (predominantly white with some color such as an eye patch), brindle or fawn. Within the fawn or brindle coats, there can exist the additional possibility of "flashy" markings - "flash" indicating the presence of white. A flashy fawn is one in which white not only covers the feet and chest but also the face and/or neck. A "plain" fawn or "plain" brindle describes a dog in which the white portion is not present or is limited to the feet and chest.

Boxers are energetic dogs and, as such, are best suited to a home with a yard, but if one is not available, frequent walks. Their sleek, short fur is not suited well to our Colorado winters - a Boxer in an unheated kennel outdoors would live a miserable life. They just don't have the dual layers of coat that other, more cold-hardy breeds enjoy such as labs and huskies.

Their energy level, without proper outlets, can lead to destructive habits - they should have plenty of access to the more dense toys (Kong, etc.) and these toys should be monitored for wear frequently as Boxers have the strong jaws and tenacity to disintegrate most petstore accessories very quickly. Also - and our family learned this the hard way - you will need to dogproof your home. Boxers are uncanny for poking their muzzles into places they don't belong and their curiosity is insatiable. Our Murphy was hospitalized briefly in 2006 for swallowing our baby's rubber bottle nipple. If the baby dropped the bottle, Murphy was there to retrieve it. Unfortunately for him, and our wallet, he secreted one away and opted to chew off the end and swallow it, causing $1700 in vet bills - putting him down was not an option. We had come to love him as a member of our family. Hopefully you will not find yourself in a similar situation, but puppy-proofing your home is the best way to prevent it.

Murphy was trained at the Colorado Dog Academy - I highly recommend obedience training for any breed. The cost is well worth the joy of walks without pulling, and the trust that is developed between he and I is priceless. Petco and Petsmart also offer very inexpensive courses - I can give you a referral if you request it for one such location.

As with all medium and large-sized breeds, special care should be taken around your smaller human family members. Half-grown Boxer puppies are no exception - their wiggling and playful antics can topple a small child. This is where obedience comes in as well. Our Boxers have been exposed to two youngins since day one and so will be well used to the smells, sights and sounds of little ones. Fortunately, Boxers are known for their high level of tolerance and affection for children.

If you are purchasing a Boxer intending him to defend your home such as a Rottweiler or Pit Bull might, you are buying the wrong puppy. Most likely this puppy will be more inclined to lick or roll onto his belly when folks enter. My male is quite gracious to anyone we allow inside. Passersby he treats with a ferocious bark, apparently to warn them that a ferocious man-eating beast lurks the premises, but as soon as the door opens and we greet the strange person, Murphy is a teddy bear. That being said, I have no doubt that he would cause grave injury to a home invader or anyone attempting to harm his family.
